24 Apr Streatham dominates South London property market
With new coffee shops and gastropubs popping up all over Streatham, Jack Osmond from Douglas & Gordon says the area is generating the sort of property buzz experienced by areas like Battersea and Balham in the years before they became ‘established’. This can only be seen as great news for the local property market and is playing its part in the so called ‘rise of Streatham’.
Jack is Douglas & Gordon’s newest property broker in Streatham, having previously headed up sales in the Balham office. In the last six months, he has noticed that buyers looking in his old patch also have Streatham on their list of areas to consider for a number of reasons.
With properties available like this 2 bedroom flat on Conyers Road, he goes on to explain that “a good proportion of the buyers we deal with in Streatham are first time buyers looking to get onto the property ladder. Nearly a third of our stock in the area is two bed flats, so we can certainly cater to their needs.”
Another popular reason why people are crossing over into Streatham is because there are many “young couples and families wanting to upsize from flats but remain in the area”. According to Jack, his recent buyers “are attracted by the idea of more space and an excellent choice of schools. Often they’re looking for their own garden and off road parking too”. Here’s an example of a lovely end of terrace family home available on Bournevale Road.
In other areas of London, properties with free space to extend into are becoming increasingly scarce or overpriced. On the other hand Jack notes that “Streatham has a good stock of lovely ground-floor flats with the potential to extend. Buying a first floor flat and then converting the loft is another popular option too”. So not only is Streatham the perfect place for couples and families looking to upsize, it’s also a great place to find substantial property development opportunities.
Since the launch of their new broker model, Douglas & Gordon says “We have been instructed on more than 100 properties since the end of January – from one bed flats to a nine bed house and everything in between. People really appreciate the flexibility that we offer and the fact that they only have to deal with one person throughout the process”.
As well as offering a service that suits people’s needs, Douglas & Gordon understands the importance of supporting the local Streatham community. This is the inspiration behind their partnership with SCCoop (Streatham common co-operative) who look after places like the common and Rookery – be sure to look out for them helping at Kite Day on the 14th May.
