01 Aug The Mere Scribbler
Resurrected from the ashes of The Waterfront and The Bank, the Mere Scribbler gastro pub has turned itself into a favourite neighbourhood watering hole and local meeting spot since it opened in April 2017.
Located on the corner of the A23 and Greyhound Lane, opposite Streatham Common, the pub is less than 10-minutes from both Streatham Common and Streatham railway stations, and on the 250, 109, 50 and 118 bus routes. It’s worth a trip from further afield for the friendly service, imaginative food and the great selection of events.
Sports fans can enjoy live action on big screens in one half of the pub, while Friday nights are all about the music – check out DJ sets from local favourites, such as the Turnstyle Records team, and live music from Hound Dogs. There’s also a weekly quiz night plus one-offs such as gin tastings.
Brunch is served until 3pm seven days a week. Take your pick from a full English for a tenner, Eggs Benedict or Florentine (£8), or go off piste with poached eggs on a pumpkin waffle, smoked aubergine and spinach (£7.50).
Evening meals are similarly creative. If you don’t fancy a gourmet burger, try a tasty lamb flat bread with minted yoghurt and coleslaw (£11.50), a veggie curry with onion bhaji waffle and rice (£11), or a grilled goat’s cheese salad (£9). On Sunday, there’s meat and veggie roasts on offer (two courses for £20).
Wash your meal down with a choice of beers from local breweries such as the Gipsy Hill Brewing Company, Inkspot (brewed at Streatham Common’s Rookery) and Croydon’s Signal Brewery, or a tipple from the wide-ranging wine list.
Keep an eye out for Mere Scribbler special offers such as a ‘dish and a drink’ for £10 from Monday to Wednesday and 2-for-1 cocktails.
